Railways earnings jump by 9%

The total goods earnings have gone up from Rs 39,087.98 crore during April-December 2008 to Rs 42,488.97 crore during the same period in 2009, which is an increase of 8.7 per cent. The total passenger earnings during first nine months of the financial year 2009-10 were Rs 17,497.18 crore as against Rs 16,242.45 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 7.73 per cent. Revenue earnings from other departments amounted to Rs 1,703.45 crore during April-December 2009 compared to Rs 1,475.33 crore during the same period last year, an increase of 15.46 per cent. Overall, the total revenue earning increase was about 9 per cent. The total approximate numbers of passengers booked during April-December 2009 were 5,569.15 million as compared to 5,320.04 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 4.68 per cent. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the numbers of passengers booked during April-December 2009 were 2,874.20 million and 2,694.95 million as compared to 2,837.21 million and 2,482.83 million during the same period last year, an increase of 1.30 per cent and 8.54 per cent, respectively.
