The problem of traffic snarls due to places of worship on public roads will not compound with the Supreme Court today ordering that there would be no fresh construction of sites of worship on any public road or lane.

The interim direction, which would be in force till final disposal of the issue, would apply to all places of worship like temples, mosques, churches and gurudwaras.
"Looking at the gravity and far reaching consequences of the issues, we have decided to implead all states and union terriotires in the matter," a bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Mukundakam Sharma said in an order. The apex court sought a response of the states/UTs on the issue.
The bench, however, said it was for the states and UTs to decide on a "case-to-case basis" the removal or otherwise of existing places of worship which have encroached on public roads/ lanes.
One of the causes of traffic snarls in major cities of the country is attributed to encroachments of public places by religious structures.
The apex court passed the direction after Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam made a plea for such an order from the courts since all the states and UTs in principle have agreed that they would not permit any fresh construction of places of worship.
