That the new direct taxes code is proving embarrassing for the government is obvious, it’s just that one didn’t realise the government felt the same way as well. At one point the code says, “A business shall be distinct and separate from another business if there is no interlacing, inter-dependence or unity ‘embarrassing’ the two businesses.” Now that’s embarrassing.

I-T Dept gets Rs 2,477 cr more from top 90 firms

Significantly, 34 of these companies shelled out 100 per cent or more in advance tax during this quarter, an I-T department source said. The 90 companies have together contributed Rs 33,358 crore to the advance tax kitty for the three quarters so far this financial year against Rs 27,197 crore in the same period last year. Of these, 68 paid a higher total advance tax payment till third quarter, while 22 shelled out a lesser amount. The exchequer had gained Rs 6,161 crore more from these 90 companies in the three quarters so far, the source said.
