National carrier Air India today received the National Energy Conservation Award 2009 for its efforts in saving fuel and reducing carbon emission.

The airline received the first prize in general category of the awards instituted by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency and the Power Ministry.
The national carrier had registered a 12.5 per cent reduction in fuel consumption in 2008-09 in comparison to 2007-08.
The company adopted various procedures in operational areas to help reduce carbon emissions, Air India officials said.
"A total carbon dioxide saving of 237,755,146 kgs has been achieved from April, 2007 to March 31 2009," they added.
